Why Suspended Ceilings Are Worth It — And When They're Not

· Andrej Szeredi

A suspended ceiling can improve acoustics, hide utilities and create space for dramatic lighting. When do we recommend one and when do we suggest alternatives?

Suspended ceilings are one of the most common modifications we carry out. But they're not always the best solution. After consulting with the client, we always recommend whether to install a drywall ceiling or a mineral fibre drop ceiling — it depends on the specific situation.

When a suspended ceiling is worth it

  • You want indirect LED lighting — the ceiling creates a shelf for LED strips, light bounces off the ceiling above
  • You need to hide utilities — electrical wiring, ventilation, heating pipes
  • You have acoustic problems — a ceiling significantly helps with echo and noise
  • You want spotlights — a suspended ceiling is ideal for recessed lights
  • The room is too tall and you want more pleasant proportions

How much does the ceiling drop?

The minimum drop is from 10 cm. It depends on what goes into the ceiling — if it's just lights, less is enough. If ventilation ducts are routed through, it could be 20-30 cm. It always depends on room height and the client's wishes.

Two-level ceiling for dramatic lighting

A very popular modification is the two-level ceiling. The lower level forms a frame around the room perimeter or an island in the center. LED strips in the gap between levels shine upward — light bounces off the upper ceiling creating soft, pleasant ambient illumination without glare.

When we don't recommend a suspended ceiling

  • The room has a low ceiling (under 250 cm) — further lowering would feel oppressive
  • You have beautiful exposed ceiling beams — better to build drywall around the beams
  • You're doing a cosmetic update only — sometimes a fresh coat of paint is enough
